‘Winter Warmers’ by Philippa Cameron

You may already be familiar with Philippa Cameron’s Instagram page What’s for Smoko and from there, A High Country Life book was published in 2021 – immensely popular featuring high country station life, food and seasons. This is her second book and delivers a full serve of hearty recipes combined with tales from past and present station crew. It’s the perfect blend for fans of land and creations from the larder.

Life is busy on Otematata Station on the South Island for Philippa, husband Joe and their two daughters, which is captured through the colourful photography by renowned Lottie Hedley. Snaps of beauty, station life and the fabulous food reflect the idyllic Cameron life.

Over seventy recipes focus on ideas to ‘fill em up’ and baking to satisfy. As you can expect, when living the high country station life, nothing is wasted and Phillipa provides advice to minimise waste and utilise left-overs – all designed to give ease on the monetary costs that is increasingly appreciated in these pressing times.

Phillipa uses a magic pot multicooker, a modern kitchen appliance, in many of her recipes and from observations, it is versatile and is beneficial in time management and ease in meal preparations.

Some cookbooks provide comfort, imagination and motivation that we need in the seasonal hibernation months. Winter Warmers is this book. Saddles, swandris and snow, as one of the chapters suggests – sums up the vibrant, earthy life and the food that springs from the imaginations of Phillipa Cameron – fifth generation farmers, showcasing the winter season on Otematata Station.
