MRS BLACKWELL’S VILLAGE BOOKSHOP IN GREYTOWN, WAIRARAPA

Step into another world at Greytown’s first dedicated bookshop in over 30 years

Books are in our DNA

Mrs Blackwell’s Village Bookshop opened in December 2020 in a building that once housed the Greytown Library.

Since then, we’ve been delighting bookworms from the Wairarapa and around New Zealand with our carefully curated selection of books, fine stationery, and jigsaw puzzles.

Join me on a guided tour of the bookshop. Survey the store, meet my Advisory Board and feel the warmth of the log burner that keeps the shop toasty all winter.

Indulge in the whole reading experience

Mrs Blackwell’s Village Bookshop isn’t just about the books. It’s about the experience.

I want you to walk away with a book (or stack of books) you’ll love. So I’ve wrangled a team of bookworms who love nothing more than to match readers with their next perfect read. Drop in to the store and have a chat with one of our superior book clerks to get some seriously good recommendations.

Be sure to check out the extensive range of fine stationery too; I live and breathe quality stationery which is why I’ve dedicated a third of the store to it. We’ve got gorgeous cards, specially-designed reading journals, tote bags to carry your books, and more wooden pencils than your primary school classroom

Don’t forget to grab yourself a “bookie” (a delicious, freshly-baked cookie from local legends, Bicycle Kitchen) to replenish your energy while you read. For a liquid pick-me-up, check out our selection of Tea Total teas — the perfect drink to curl up with as you settle in for a lengthy reading session.

“A place where the books find you.”

New Zealand’s Best Region for Readers

One of the (many) great things about the Wairarapa is we have 13 fantastic bookshops all within 30 minutes - or less - drive of one and other. If you’re making a weekend trip to Greytown you can visit Featherston Booktown - home to 6 secondhand booksellers - in just 10 minutes, and the Martinborough Bookshop is a mere 15 minutes from Greytown.

Visit our region in October for our annual Bookshop Hop, in celebration of The Great New Zealand Bookshop Day.

“The most beautiful bookshop I’ve ever been in. I feel like a character in a fairytale.”

Give the gift of literature

Give your friends, family, or clients a book to remember with our premium gifting service. Our team of book nerds will lovingly select, wrap, and post a book to the reader in your life. They’ll even handwrite a card from you! All you need to do is sit back and take the credit.

“Amazing to find a bookshop this good in the middle of nowhere!” - Visitor from Hamilton

Sell your wares alongside Mrs Blackwell

I’m always looking for artists, makers, growers, or tinkerers to sell their goods outside the bookshop from one of our stunning, vintage market carts.

The Village Bookshop playlist

Want to recreate the ambience of the bookshop while you’re curled up with your new book? I’ve put together a playlist of my favourite tunes from the shop floor. Settle in for eight hours and 35 minutes (and counting) of relaxing Americana, alt-country, and folk music — the perfect background music for book browsing, crafting, or reading.
